The Second Amendment’s protection of the right to keep and bear arms is an individual right tied to the natural right of self-defense as interpreted by the U.S. Supreme Court in District of Columbia v. Heller (2008). This right is critical not only for individual self-defense, but also in the event that the government becomes destructive of its purpose in securing individual rights. The right to bear arms is also enshrined in the Montana constitution for self-defense as well as an integral part of the preservation of the state’s harvest heritage. As a gun owner, a strong believer in the right of self-defense, and an avid hunter, I will always protect our right to keep and bear arms.
