Public confidence in the integrity of elections is essential to the survival of our Republic. It is our faith in election integrity that legitimizes our representative democracy. False charges of election fraud can undermine that faith. In the last legislative session, several bills were passed and signed into law that strengthened election integrity. It would have been strengthened even more if HB 402 had passed, which would have made Montana the first state in the country to confirm voter citizenship upon registration. Although more can be done to improve the security and integrity of our elections, the hand counting of ballots is not one of them.
