The first eight Amendments to the U.S. Constitution guarantee certain individual rights, among these are freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, right of assembly, right to petition, right against unreasonable searches and seizures, right against self-incrimination, and the right to due process. These are “unalienable rights,” according to the Declaration of Independence, which governments are instituted to secure. To ensure that the government does not become destructive of this purpose and to guarantee that Montanans enjoy “the Blessings of Liberty” for which the Constitution was established, I will always protect these rights.
